A Note to Mothers and Wives of XBOX lovers: S.M. Bjarnson

If you grew up in the 90’s or earlier, or later. Or you have a spouse from a similar generation. You cannot blame them for being video game lovers. This is what their generations were raised on; the XBOX, PLAYSTATION, NINTENDO, ETC… They thrive on the freedom of having fun again, being able to conquer zombies, win battles and most importantly take down the enemy at hand.
You may find the annoyance in the endless hours of gaming, waking up to find the TV is left buzzing. The controller still in his hands, and his headset on, as if he was just taking a quick power nap, before gearing up to get going again.
My fellow women understand that there are both positives and negatives to this obsession. Video games teach high level skills, problem solving, logistics, hand-eye coordination, planning resource, management, multi-tasking, quicker analyzing knowledge. These are great and wonderful things help to improve your loved ones personality and overall character. These qualities however you look at them, regulate positive skills they need in the real world. Sure, long hours staring at a screen, strain eye sight, and sometimes the kids who have played them become withdrawn.
Let me shed some light on a few examples. My oldest son is two years old and will be 3 soon. By the time he was 1 ½ he could hold the controller, know which colors and letters that went together and many various controls. His memory is impeccable, his vocabulary expands daily and understands more than any toddler should at his level. He comprehends that the story-telling behind video games are fictitious.

I could go on and list for miles, how I have struggled with allowing this obsession of the gaming world to take over our lives and be an influence for our young sons. I find it easier to embrace it and enjoy it. Watching them discover and learn. As a family we have gone to midnight releases with a 5 month old and toddler.
Gaming, has turned into a revolution of being. An evolution of thinking. When trying to limit or exterminate the habit of gaming from your husband and children, remember you can always turn it into a positive. This is a part of them, this hobby in many ways is a dear friend to them. Motivating them to continue, giving them the privilege of second chances, while learning fine motor skills. Helping them find acceptance and meet other players. It helps them to be social when during the day, that doesn’t seem to be a possibility or interest to them.
On a last note when it comes to taking away the controller do it out love and because of time management, not for the purpose of degrading their character or punishing them for being glued to intense game. After all merely seeing from their point of view, doesn’t have to be opposite or a negative impulse. Understanding and accepting is more about being aware of your opinion as well as their own.

A.C.T. or R.E.A.C.T. The Choice is Yours.- S.M. Bjarnson

We all have those days. Those days when every event in the hours and minutes seem to be on a path to destroy our happiness and sanity. Moments when we don’t know if we should just crawl underneath the bed and lay there for hours, waiting for spring to bloom. Winter has made us weary and often distraught.
Though the sun is shining and we are eager to feel the warmth of the UV rays upon our pale skin, there is much more we can do than just respond or R.E.A.C.T. to these types of situations. I came up with an acronym, which really explains further our intentions when focusing our views in certain ways.

Act: to produce an effect; to behave or conduct oneself in a particular fashion
Renounce: to give up or put aside voluntarily
Relinquish: to renounce or surrender, to give up; put aside or desist from
Sometimes it is hard not to respond negatively and relinquish the positive energy we were keeping inside, holding us together. Other times, we have immediate impulses to A.C.T. and not let these minor infractions get us down. Being aware or accurately considering the current time that we are facing helps us to remember to not give control over to others. Having those tense moments and festering on renouncing our energy against the current situation can be difficult leaving us unhappy.
When we are presented with a troublesome situation, we have two choices to make, either A.C.T. or R.E.A.C.T. Which one will you choose? Don’t give others power over you.
